ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)2] on the bond strength and adaptation of glass fiber posts luted with a dual-curing resin cement. Fifty decoronated premolars were sectioned 14 mm from the apex and endodontically treated. The root canal filling was partially removed. The specimens were divided into 5 groups (n=10) according to the irrigant for post space irrigation: 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl), (control); 2.5% NaOCl; 5.25% NaOCl; 2.5% Ca(OCl)2; and 5.25% Ca(OCl)2. For each group, irrigation was performed with 5 ml of solution. Afterward, the posts were luted with a dual-curing resin cement. One slice from each third was obtained and submitted to the push-out test and failure modes analysis. An additional slice from the middle third was submitted to confocal images for analysis of adaptation failures (gaps). Two-way ANOVA, Tukey's post-hoc, Kruskal-Wallis with Bonferroni adjusted, and chi-square tests, analyzed data. The group treated with 5.25% NaOCl showed lower bond strength values and generated more cohesive failures compared to the control (p < 0.05). Bond strength decreased from coronal to apical in the post space (p < 0.001). The groups treated with NaOCl had the highest percentages of gaps compared to the control (p < 0.05). Regardless of concentration, Ca(OCl)2 did not influence the bond strength and the occurrence of gaps (P > 0.05). Ca(OCl)2 is a good option for irrigating the post space before luting a fiber post with a dual-curing resin cement.

ABSTRACT

Statement of problem: the bond strength between adhesive cement and root dentin can be affected by irrigation protocols. Purpose: therefore, the objective of this systematic review was to answer the following question: Do irrigation solutions used during root canal instrumentation influence the adhesion of glass fiber posts to root dentin? Material and Methods: this study followed the recommendations of PRISMA 2020 for writing. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS databases were searched for articles published until 26 January, 2022. Grey literature and a manual search were also performed. The inclusion criteria were based on the PICO strategy: permanent human or animal teeth (P), which were irrigated during root canal instrumentation with endodontic substances (I) and compared to irrigation with sodium hypochlorite at various concentrations (C) to analyze the bond strength of glass fiber posts (O). Two authors independently performed data extraction and the risk of bias. Results: eight articles were included. Four articles were classified as having a high risk of bias, where the others as medium risk. Studies have reported conflicting results regarding the influence of irrigating solutions and the different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite on the adhesion of glass fiber posts to root dentin. Conclusion: the heterogeneity between studies did not allow the conclusion of a true estimate regarding this topic, and further well-designed studies are needed to clarify this issue. Register: CRD42020221835. (AU)

ABSTRACT

@#This review summarized the most recently published literature pertaining to the use of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) to restore endodontically treated teeth (ETT) and its influence on the mechanical behavior of restored teeth. Indepth¬ literature review in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and PubMed was performed for these keywords: “fiber-reinforced composite”; “fiber post”; “endodontically treated”; “short fiber-reinforced composite”— only published fulltext articles between 2009 and 2021 are included in this review. Fourteen articles were selected for this review. The studies concentrated on laboratory-based research conducted on human and bovine extracted teeth with different restorative techniques. Fatigue survival and load to failure tests with assessment of survival rate and fracture strength values respectively, as well as fracture pattern analysis were done. We concluded that FRC materials have improved fracture strength of restored teeth compared to conventional composites using different restorative techniques, however not to the attained level of an intact natural tooth. In addition, authors recommend a better simulation of oral environment, such as dynamic fatigue-testing.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of calcium silicate-based sealers on the bond strength of fiber posts using conventional and self-adhesive resin cement. Sixty single-rooted teeth were selected. The canals were prepared with a reciprocating instrument 40.06. The roots were randomly distributed in six groups (n = 10) according to the strategies for root canal filling and fiber posts cementation: AH Plus/RelyX ARC; AH Plus/RelyX U200; Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC; Bio C Sealer/RealyX U200; Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC; and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX U200. The roots were transversally sectioned, and one slice per post-third was obtained. The push-out test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. The failure patterns were described after assessment with a stereomicroscope with a 10× magnification. Bond strength was calculated and analyzed using the ANOVA and Tukey test. AH Plus did not influence the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional (RelyX ARC) or with self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200). The lowest bond strength values were obtained when calcium silicate-based sealers were associated with conventional resin cement (Bio C Sealer/RelyX ARC and Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC). Except for Sealer Plus BC/RelyX ARC, all groups presented lower bond strength at the apical portion compared to the cervical portion of the post. Adhesive failures between cement and post and cement and dentin were predominant (55.3%). Calcium silicate-based sealers decreased the bond strength of fiber posts cemented with conventional resin cement.

ABSTRACT

@#Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is known as a high-grade engineering plastic with good mechanical properties, chemical stability and biocompatibility. Currently, PEEK materials have been widely used in prosthodontics, such as complete dentures and removable partial dentures. The relevant research shows that PEEK posts are superior to glass fiber posts, which have high tensile bond strength and bending strength. At present, few case reports of PEEK postcores have been published, and clinical case reports suggest that PEEK postcores have good oral prosthetic aesthetics and are ideal and reliable postcore crown materials. However, the preparation and surface treatment methods of PEEK require further refinement. A review of the related properties of PEEK and the prospects of its application in the field of postcore crown restoration will be presented in this paper.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate with microtomography the existing pores between the resin cement, fiber post and canal walls in the different in thirds of the canal, in single-root lower premolars. Fifteen recently extracted human single root lower premolars were used, endodontically treated, and filled with gutta-percha cones and resin-based endodontic cement. Once unfilled, the posts were cemented. Each sample was positioned on a custom fixture and scanned using a Microtomograph. Each sample was evaluated using CTAn v.1.12 software (Bruker-microCT) to obtain the surface area (mm2), volume of interest (mm3) of each pore between dentin and post at the coronal, middle and apical levels. Data were analyzed using Friedman's tests or repeated measures ANOVA. The volume of the pores between the three root thirds using the Friedman test, a significant global difference was found (F = 30.00; p < 0.05). The third in which the pores presented a greater volume (mm3) was the coronal third (means: 0.29250), followed by the middle (means: 0.03200) and apical (means: 0.00140) thirds. The comparison of the pore surface between the 3 thirds gave an analogous result to that of the volume comparison. The largest surface area (mm2) corresponded to the coronal third (mean ± SD 1.66377 ± 0.27175), followed by the middle (mean ± 1.16210 ± 0.20343) and apical (mean ± 0.41074 ± 0.12641) thirds.Microtomography allowed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the pores in the entire sample without deterioration. It can be concluded that the coronal third has more pores than the apical third with the cementation technique used. Regarding the surface and volume of the pores, the results found are similar to those reported by various authors (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to compare the effect of four irrigation solutions for post space cleaning on the bond strength between glass fiber post and root dentine. Forty bovine roots were root-filled and randomly divided into four groups (n=10), according to the irrigation solution: CG (Control Group): saline solution; SH (Sodium Hypochlorite Group); CLX (Chlorhexidine group) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid group). Specimens were submitted to mechanical aging and push-out test. Statistical analysis (ANOVA two-way and Tukey test; p<0.05) was performed. A stereomicroscope was used for failure mode classification. EDTA showed higher bond strength values, differing statistically from SH and CG (p<0.05). Adhesive failure between dentin and resinous cement was predominant, followed by mixed failures. SEM images showed pronounced smear layer removal in the EDTA group. 17 % EDTA was better than other solutions for cleaning of post space when using glass fiber posts.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The primary function of corono-radicular post is to provide retention for the core and to reinforce and to replace the remaining coronal tooth structure. There is considerable controversy regarding optimal choice of the material. An ideal post system should exhibit fracture resistance higher than the average masticatory forces. Finite elemental analysis (FEA) method facilitates precise analysis of the distribution and magnitude of stresses at any point of complex and irregular structures. Thus, this FEA study has been undertaken to evaluate the fracture stress distribution patterns in three fiber posts, viz., carbon, glass fiber, and everStick with an FEA. Materials and Methods: The FE stress analysis was performed with the FE software program (CATIA). Three two-dimensional FEA models of central incisor were simulated, and elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio of all the materials were fed to the software. For all the models, a 200 N vertical force was applied on the lingual surface of the tooth at an angle of 45°. Stress concentration and distribution were evaluated and noted down for all the models. To evaluate the stresses within the restored tooth, the modified von Mises failure criterion was used. The equivalent stresses found in the tested models were compared with the tensile strength of the respective materials. Contact stresses in the luting cement–dentin interface were calculated. Results: Finite element method revealed that maximum stress concentration was at the point of stress application. The stress value was highest in carbon fiber post followed by glass fiber post and least stresses found in everStick post. Maximum stress was observed at the labial surfaces of crown. However, the stress values and distribution were more homogenous in everStick post. Conclusion: The present findings suggest that everStick post has uniform stress distribution within tooth structure.

ABSTRACT

Objective @#To explore the technology and efficacy of fabrication of a guide and removal of a fiber post by tetrahedron positioning technology at the chair side.@*Methods@# For one patient with acute chronic periapical periodontitis of the left maxillary lateral incisor who needed to have the fiber post removed, the chair side tetrahedral positioning technique was used to make a guide plate to remove the fiber post. Cone beam CT (CBCT) data were imported into the software to design the guide plate for fiber post removal. The guide plate design on CBCT was transferred to a solid model by using tetrahedral positioning technology. The guide plate was made to guide the removal of the fiber post, and then left maxillary lateral incisor root canal was performed. We evaluated the effect of fiber post removal with tetrahedral positioning technology by reviewing the literature.@*Results @#The guide plate made by tetrahedral positioning technology can accurately locate the position and direction of fiber posts at a low cost and with high speed. After the fiber post was removed, the root canal could be dredged by using root canal preparation instruments. After root canal preparation, the root canal was filled with warm gutta-percha to complete the root canal treatment. After 3 months, the apical radiograph showed that the transmission shadow of the apical area was reduced. The results of the literature review showed that the fiber post removal with guide plates provides a predictable result and a lower risk of iatrogenic damage. Minimally invasive treatment can be carried out, and chair time can be reduced.@*Conclusion@#On the basis of CBCT data, using tetrahedral positioning technology to make fiber post removal guides can help reduce the risk of fiber post removal and has the characteristics of speed, low cost and short chair side processing. However, the accuracy comparison between tetrahedral positioning technology and 3D printing guides needs further study.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Glass fiber posts have been widely used for the reconstruction of elements with excessive dental structure loss. Objective: Evaluate the bond strength of glass fiber posts after various root dentin treatments in different regions (cervical, middle and apical thirds). Methods: An experimental in vitro study was conducted. Forty bovine teeth were selected, prepared and distributed into four groups according to the surface treatment used: (1) adhesive, (2) chelating agent, (3) polyacrylic acid, (4) not treated. The glass fiber posts were cemented with self-etch resin cement. After 20 days, each root was sectioned crosswise into three slices (1 mm in thickness) obtained from three regions. Bond strength was determined in each section with a push-out bond strength test. Flexural strength data (MPa) were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey's tests. Results: In the cervical portion, the group with previous polyacrylic acid treatment displayed lower push-out strength than the group without previous treatment. The group with application of the adhesive system (28.89 ± 6.64 MPa) and the group with previous EDTA treatment (21.58 ± 6.39 MPa) did not exhibit any statistically significant differences in comparison with the group without previous treatment (control group) in the cervical third. In the middle and apical portions, the group treated with the adhesive Ambar® of FGM Dental Group showed higher bond values in comparison with the other groups. Conclusion: Previous adhesive application increased bond strength in the middle and apical thirds in comparison with the other groups, and may thus have a beneficial effect on the clinical success of the restorative treatment(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study was conducted to evaluate whether antibacterial pretreatment irrigation with silver nanoparticles (SNPs) and silver diamine fluoride (SDF) has any effect on bond strength of fiber posts cemented with three types of resin cements in root canal space. Fifty-four endodontically treated maxillary central incisor roots were prepared for fiber post (FRC Postec Plus NO.3, Ivoclar Vivadent) cementation and divided into nine groups in terms of three cement types and two pretreatments with silver antibacterial agents. The cements were as follows: an etch-and-rinse cement (ER, Excite DSC/Variolink N), a self-etch cement (SE, ED Primer/Panavia F2.0), and a self-adhesive cement (SA, Panavia SA Luting Plus). For each cement, the control group was with no treatment and two experimental groups were with SNPs and SDF treatments that were used after acid-etching for ER cement and after EDTA treatment for SE and SA cements. After fiber post cementation, each bonded root was horizontally sectioned into 1-mm thickness microslices to create two slices for each root region (apical, middle and coronal) and underwent push-out bond strength (PBS) test. Data in MPa were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p=0.05). The interaction of the pretreatment type and cement type was significant (p<0.001). SNPs and SDF significantly increased PBS with ER cement (p≤0.04). This positive effect was also marginally significant for SDF with SE cement (p=0.049). For SA cement, SNPs showed a significant positive effect, but SDF had a significant adverse effect on PBS (p<0.001). The effect of pretreatment with silver antibacterial agents prior to adhesive cementation of fiber posts depends on the resin cement used. Contrary to SNPs with beneficial or no significant effect on bonding for all cements, SDF exhibited a deleterious effect with self-adhesive cement.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Untouched canal walls with residual filling materials can increase the probability of adhesive failure of fiber posts. The drills used for desobturation and conformation of the prosthetic space, has a circular cross section, which does not allow a proper preparation and cleaning of oval-shaped canal walls. The objective of the study was to evaluate the ultrasonic cleaning of the prosthetic space and how this influences the adhesive strength of fiber posts in oval-shaped canals. Thirty (30) oval-shaped canal premolars were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 10): Group A: rotary desobturation with ultrasonic complement, group B: rotary desobturation without ultrasonic complement and group C: control group. Fiberglass posts were cemented; after 7 days, one-millimeter slices were performed, one of the cervical and another from the middle third of the root. The slices were analyzed under an optical microscope to evaluate remaining gutta percha and effective adhesion area. Samples were subjected to a push-out test to evaluate bond strength of the fiber resin posts. Finally, samples were evaluated microscopically to analyze the type of failure. The results were analyzed using ANOVA, Bonferroni, KruskalWallis and Mann Whitney test (p < 0.05), recording statistically significant differences in bond strength, remaining gutta-percha area and clean walls for adhesion; In addition, to a direct relationship between remaining gutta percha and lower adhesive strength, the ultrasonic preparation of the prosthetic space increases bond strength of fiber posts in oval canals.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The resistance adhesive of a fiber post can be affected by several factors, such as the endodontic sealer and post-endodontic waiting time. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different endodontic sealers and two different post-endodontic waiting times on the bond strength of fiber posts. Material and method: Seventy-two bovine teeth were endodontically treated and filled using three endodontic sealers: eugenol-based, epoxy resin-based, or mineral trioxide aggregate-based. The specimens were stored at 37°C for 24 hours or for 30 months. After the respective storage times, the root canals were prepared for luting fiber posts using RelyX U200. Push-out tests and analysis of failures were performed. The push-out data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance to compare the effects of the endodontic sealer and with the t-test to compare the effects of post-endodontic waiting time. Result: The AH Plus sealer yielded the highest bond strength values at 30 months post-endodontics (11.26 Mpa) (p < 0.05), however no had difference with Endofill sealer at the same time. Endofill and MTA Fillapex sealers did not differ significantly in their effects, irrespective of the post-endodontic waiting time. Conclusion: In conclusion, the endodontic sealer used and post-endodontic waiting time affect the adhesive resistance of fiber posts. The adhesion increases significantly when the fiber post is cemented 30 months after the root canal filling, while the adhesion is reduced when cementing immediately after root canal treatment, in particular for eugenol-based endodontic sealers.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To evaluate the influence of lengths and different luting agents on the bond strength of fiberglass posts' adhesion to dentin. Methods: Sixty single-root bovine teeth were endodontically treated and included in polyether and acrilyc resin to simulate a periodontal ligament. These were divided into 6 groups according to the post lengths (6, 10 or 14 mm) and luting agents (self-adhesive dual resin cement U; or etch-and-rinse dual resin cement A): U6, U10, U14, A6, A19, and A14. All fiberglass posts were cemented according to manufacturer instructions. After this, mechanical aging was performed (1.2x106 cycles; 4 Hz, 90 N). The push-out specimens were then conducted (2.0 ± 0.1 mm), with the test executed in a universal machine (10 kgf at 0.5 mm/min). Data obtained were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test. Results: No statistically significant difference was observed in bond strength between the groups due to the type of luting agent (p > 0.05). However, the isolated post-length factor showed significantly different results for the U groups (p < 0.05). The U10 group showed similar union values to U6 but statistically inferior to U14. Conclusion: bond strength of fiberglass posts of the same length as the dentin presented no differences according to the luting agent, but the post-length property influenced the bond strength when self-adhesive resin cement was used.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Posts and core are frequently used in endodontically treated teeth with excessive loss of coronal tooth structure. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of self-adhesive cements under different pre-treatments of dentin in the resistance to extrusion of fiberglass posts. Methods: An experimental in vitro study was conducted. The randomly selected sample was 56 extracted bovine incisors with mature apices and without root curvature. Before the cementing procedure, pretreatment of dentin was performed with 11.5 percent polyacrylic acid, 17 percent EDTA or sodium hypochlorite. The type of failure between the post/cement/dentin was evaluated by stereomicroscope. Two hundred and sixteen bovine dentin discs were used. The disks were approximately 1 mm thick, and were obtained from 72 bovine roots restored with intraradicular retentions. Data were analyzed for better comprehension in an SPSS database for Windows version 15. Results: The highest values were found in groups G3, G4 and G5, and there was no bond strength significant difference in group G2. Conclusions: The pre-treatment had no effect on dentin bond strength, and the self-adhesive cement RelyX U100 appears to be a viable option in the cementation of fiber posts(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The clinical longevity of tooth restoration -whether directly or indirectly using composites- greatly depends on the quality and stability of the marginal adaptation. Even today, dental restoration failure is a major complication in everyday dental practice. Objective: To evaluate the effect of restoration techniques on the microtensile bond strength and marginal integrity of class II cavities. Methods: An experimental in vitro investigation was made. Preparations (5 × 4 × 2 mm) below the cement-enamel junction were performed in 45 human maxillary premolars (n= 15) that were the sample of the study selected to random. The G1 group incrementally received Spectrum TPH3 Dentsply De trey in three horizontal incremental layers. The G2 group received a bulk restoration technique (one 4-mm increment of Surefill SDR flow plus one 1-mm horizontal capping layer of Spectrum TPH3 Dentsply De trey using a metal matrix band. For the G3 group, impressions were made from each cavity preparation, and Spectrum was used to complete an indirect composite restoration. After storage (24 h/37 °C), the proximal surfaces of each tooth were polished with Sof-Lex disks. For microtensile bond strength testing, all premolars were sectioned into resin-dentine beams (0.8 mm2) and were tested under tension (0.5 mm/min). Results: Microtensile bond strength testing and marginal integrity values were not statistically significantly affected by the type of restoration technique used (p> 0.05). Conclusions: The Surefill SDR flow that used a capping layer made of conventional composite can be an alternative to reduce procedure durations as well as additional steps in the restorative technique(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction Glass-fiber posts are used in order to improve the retention of restorations in endodontically treated teeth. Objective To evaluate the bond strength of glass-fiber posts submitted to different surface treatments and cemented to the root canal dentin with self-adhesive resin cement. Material and method Thirty roots of human canines were prepared and divided according to two factors: surface treatments (silane, 35% hydrogen peroxide, or sodium bicarbonate) and root thirds (cervical and middle thirds). The glass-fiber posts were cemented with self-adhesive resin cement (RelyX U200). After 24 h, the specimens were prepared for microtensile bond strength test (hourglass format), fracture pattern and micromorphological assessment by scanning electronic microscopy, in order to measure the cement line. Result The data (MPa and µm) were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5%). The surface treatments influenced the bond strength of the posts cemented with self-adhesive resin cement (p<0.00). The mean bond strength (standard deviations) differed according to the region of root dentin (p<0.00): the cervical region (Control: 19.16MPa (3.71); Silane: 25.65MPa (4.04); Hydrogen peroxide: 24.43MPa (3.16); Sodium bicarbonate: 37.42MPa (8.27)) showed higher bond strength values than the middle third of the root (Control: 14.66MPa (4.65); Silane: 12.52MPa (5.03); Hydrogen peroxide: 10.64MPa (3.33); Sodium bicarbonate: 10.87MPa (2.49)). Conclusion Treatment of the glass-fiber post surface with chemical and physical agents increased the bond strength of the cement-post-dentin interface in the cervical third and the treatment with Sodium bicarbonate showed better results in bond strength.
